Using Gmax with 3D Explorer

Here is a tutorial that explains how to export via the md3 format, then use a program called 3D Explorer ( now called Deep Exploration, get the new demo version here...requires registration but you get loads of format support, or download the older 1.5 version by pressing here) to convert the files. Similar to the techniques used for UT2K3, it's goal is to artificially expand the export capabilities of gmax to allow for modeling for games that don't have their own game packs. I did not write this tutorial, but found it here. I tried to get in contact with the author, but his/her email was returned as invalid. If you know the author, please let them know it is posted here. EXPORTING IN GMAX TUTORIAL v.1

 By Sandman69247

Welcome to the Gmax Exporting Tutorial. This tutorial is by no means the last word in exporting with Gmax. This outlines the process that I discovered when experimenting with the Quake III Tempest game pack. If you discover a better or simpler way, let me know.  First, I’m going to assume that you have learned the interface and are in the process of making a model. It is best if your model, when ready to export, is all one object. To check this, just press ‘h’ on your keyboard; a list of objects will appear; if more than one object listed, try to ‘attach’ all objects into one.

After making sure that you have one object to export, go to Files>Export

The Save To dialogue appears; type the name that you want to export you model in; choose file type MD3

Click save; it will ask you for frames...enter 0 (zero)

There will now be a dialogue concerning Textures; click ok.

If everything worked ok, you should be able to open it in 3D Explorer.

If you were successful in exporting correctly, your model should appear; You are now ready to convert to .3ds or .lwo for conversion to .mod.

Click File>SaveAs:  in the Save as type box select the format you want, i.e. .3ds, .lwo or whatever.

The export properties dialogue appears; click ok. You have now exported into .3ds or.lwo!!
